TIB is Sunsetting the Relight Washington Program

November 27, 2024

Over 90% of eligible agencies have taken advantage of the program.

The Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) will not be accepting new grant proposals for the Relight Washington Program. The board voted at its November 2024 meeting in Vancouver, WA to sunset this program after 10 years of success.

In 2015 TIB began offering grants to cities and towns to convert their streetlights to low energy LED lights. The purpose of the program was to lower the energy costs spent on streetlights to allow the city to increase their street preservation and maintenance funds. Eligible agencies included cities and towns with a population under 5,000 and cities with an assessed value of less than $2 billion.

Over 91% of eligible agencies have taken advantage of the program. $18.4 million has been awarded through 211 grants, replacing 48,761 streetlights throughout Washington State. Many of the remaining lights have been or will be converted by the local agency.

It has always been TIB's intent to sunset the program once all eligible agencies had the opportunity to convert their streetlights. A few remaining grants that are still open will be paid out upon completion of the projects.
