Damson Road is a 35 mph urban collector arterial. Continuous ADA compliant pedestrian facilities have been requested by community members and the school district, especially after a pedestrian fatality in 2018. This sidewalk gap on the east side of the road will be the only gap remaining that has not been filled in by a developer or as part of school upgrades. Until the gap is completed, pedestrians have to cross the road twice to avoid the gap or walk in the shoulder between three busy school driveways. Due to the typical volume of traffic and the number of family vehicles attempting to access the schools parking area and to drop off and pick up students, the school provides crossing guards at three locations. In some locations students have only 5 feet of shoulder separating them from traffic due to traffic cones that are placed to prevent cars from parking on the shoulder and obstructing the pathway.

Project Description
Installing a five-foot sidewalk to fill the approximately 330 feet sidewalk gap on the east side of Damson Road in front of Hilltop Elementary School will provide a continuous pedestrian facility. The project will remove obstructions such as vegetation, fencing, and signage in the pedestrian walk route necessary to maintain an ADA compliant sidewalk. A five-foot wide planter strip, curb and gutter, and updated ADA ramps will also be installed. Elementary school students will no longer need to walk on the shoulder that is frequently blocked by parked cars or cross the street twice to stay on a pedestrian facility.
