Existing Conditions

The 122nd Ave. E. / Military Rd. E. / Shaw Rd. E. corridor is the most consequential north-south route maintained by Pierce County in the South Hill area. The corridor connects the Sunrise Master Planned Community and other highly populated Urban Growth Area neighborhoods to jobs and services in Puyallup, South Hill, the Orting Valley, and other designated urban centers. 122nd Ave. E. is also a popular route to bypass the heavily congested SR-161. In 2016 122nd Ave. E. failed to meet concurrency standards for the first time (including this applications segment). Traffic volumes briefly dipped during the pandemic, but as of 2023 they have rebounded strongly. The volume to service ratio is currently 1.28, with projections anticipating 1.40 by 2029. Pierce County must address this concurrency failure in a timely manner for the sake of the traveling public and to remain in compliance with the Growth Management Act.
