Existing Conditions

Othello has the potential to be a very walkable town; it is compact, not hilly, and therefore easily accessible by foot. Per Othello Schools, 35% of students walk to school, and some community members walk for personal business needs. When many residential neighborhoods in the center of town were built, sidewalks were not required, so most of these neighborhoods lack sidewalks. Currently, Othello has 45.3 miles of missing sidewalks and many areas have been plagued by excessive speeding, causing hazards for pedestrians who must walk in the street. The Planning Commission, Active Transportation Plan, and 6-year TIP have identified the installation of sidewalks on at least 1 side of these Collector and Arterial Streets as a priority for increasing pedestrian safety. The addition of sidewalks on at least 1 side of the road along Juniper St., 4th Ave., and other various sections of arterial and collector streets will ensure this pedestrian safety and provide an adequate pedestrian network.

Description of Improvements

We desire to improve this situation with sidewalks to fill in crucial gaps in our pedestrian network. By the construction of sidewalks on at least one side of the road along Juniper Street, 4th Avenue, and other various sections of arterial and collector streets, we can provide a safe path for pedestrians on highly used streets. TIB funds will be used to fill in the gaps on the federally classified roadways, while City funds will be used to complete the gaps on the non-classified roadways (4th Avenue, Cedar Street, and part of Juniper Street)
