Existing ConditionsThe Alderwood Mall Parkway project will address congestion and safety issues that negatively impact the community. The Parkway is a 3-lane Urban Major Collector that serves as an important north-south corridor, between SR 525 and 168th St. SW. The existing roadway within project limits has one through lane in each direction, a center turn lane with varying shoulder and intermittent sidewalks on the west side, leading to traffic congestion and queuing. The ADT on this road is 20,000 and there have been 23 accidents in the project limits within the last three years. This section of road creates a bottleneck with the adjacent 5-lane roadway section to the north and south, contributing to congestion during peak hours. The existing culverts for Box Spring Creek and two unnamed tributaries, are non-fish passable culverts and do not meet standard. Additionally, the lighting along this corridor is inconsistent. |

Summary of Improvements
- Improves safety;
- Improves mobility;
- Relieves congestion;
- Removes ADA barriers;
- Builds multimodal facilities
Description of Improvements
The project will improve traffic flow, capacity, and safety for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists by widening the roadway from three to five lanes. It will include: two through lanes in each direction with a center two way turn lane; continuous curb and gutter; raised bike lane (providing a physical separation) and sidewalks on both sides with ADA compliant curb ramps at all designated crossing. This will align with the five-lane road configuration to the north and south thus eliminating the bottle neck in this section of the corridor. The traffic signal upgrades and improvements to the intersection at the SR 525 NB On/Off Ramps will increase capacity and improve travel times at this intersection. Storm water conveyance and water quality treatment facilities will be developed as part of this project. Three fish bearing culverts will be upgraded to Box culverts to meet the current standards to ensure fish passage.Low impact illumination will be installed throughout the corridor.
