Pedestrian crossings on multi-lane, large volume, and higher speed roadways are encouraged to include enhanced safety crossing features. Absent a signalized intersection or pedestrian bridge, enhancement ideas can include refuge islands, activated flashing beacons (RRFB and HAWK systems). The City of Monroe has identify 4 locations within the City where the risk to pedestrians desires more protection than the standard crosswalk. These will be located in areas that experiences both high vehicle traffic and high pedestrian traffic, and that serve common pedestrian routes.

Project Description
The project will add four RRFBs enhanced crossings. One of the proposed crossings will require three beacons, as there is an existing median on a four-lane road section. Three crossings will only require two beacons, as the roadway is narrower with two-lanes. The City plans to utilize local agency forces to perform the design and construction. The funding request from TIB will be used in support of the construction phase only. There are four locations that we are looking at -2 beacons at the intersection of Blueberry and King -3 beacons at Main and Sams -2 beacons at the Lewis and Fremont -2 beacons at Chain Lake Road
