One of the main concerns staff heard during the outreach and development of the City Beautification Action Plan and the Twin City Mile project was the high rate of speed of traffic on 271st Street. The key to managing traffic speed is to slow it down before it reaches downtown. The purpose of the east end near-term improvements is to promote pedestrian visibility and calm traffic as vehicles travel along the corridor and to add beautification of the corridor. Two implementation projects are being proposed 1. Traffic Calming bulb outs at the 88th Avenue NW / 271st Street NW intersection and elimination of a left turn lane to straighten alignment of 271st St. NW. to continue implementation of the downtown beautification project.2.Traffic calming bulb outs in the mid-block crossing for pedestrian safety and beautification.

Project Benefits
- The proposed project includes calming measures to reduce speed of traffic on 271st St. (Stanwoods Main Street) to improve pedestrian safety, and also incorporates design elements to improve the beauty at the heart of downtown Stanwood. It implements several elements of our Complete Streets Program. Section 11.12.011 Purpose states the purpose of Stanwoods Complete Streets program is to: Prioritize the needs and comfort of all people and travelers, considering such issues as street design and width, improve public safety and health, and create integrated, aesthetically pleasing and connected systems. The complete streets ordinance gives examples of complete street design interventions in Figure 11.12.010(A) Traffic Calming and Mid-Block Crossing and Figure 11.12.010(C) Bump-out Crossing. Our proposed project implements both bump-out crossings, and a mid-block crossing. The adopted ordinance states these improvements should be aesthetically pleasing. To improve the aesthetic of the improvements we are proposing stamped concrete crossings, with paver concrete bulb-outs. The stamped brick matches other local projects and a historic brick street along the Main Street.
