This project seeks to improve the safety of the crossings across Main St, Parker Rd E, and Valley Ave around Sumner High School and some of the downtown businesses. This project will install rapid flashing beacons, curb bulb outs, and refresh the painted crosswalks. These crossings are very busy due to the number of students that attend Sumner High School who walk to and from school, and those in the community who walk to the surrounding businesses. Some of these crossings do not have pedestrian visibility, and this corridor is very active with traffic at all times of the day.

Project Description

Project Benefits
- This project will upgrade various intersections along Main St, Parker Rd E, and Valley Ave that currently lack pedestrian visibility, have noncompliant ADA curb ramps, and have little to no crosswalk markings. This project includes the installation of RRFBs at each location that crosses Main St, Parker Rd E, and Valley Ave, refreshed crosswalk paint, curb bulb outs to put the pedestrians further into the roadway safely and to better define on-street parking, and upgraded ADA curb ramps at each corner that meet ADA requirements. The Main St corridor is very busy at all times of the year with the High School located on Main St of which two of the crossings are in front of the school, and the multitude of downtown businesses. Additionally, there have recently been apartment complexes constructed at the eastern end of Main St, of which there are crossings that are lacking. By adding these crossings at these locations, there would become better accessibility for those residents, and those within the City of Sumner walking to and from the YMCA, along with the schools in the neighborhoods.
