Project Description
This project will effectively close a gap in the existing sidewalk infrastructure by constructing new sidewalk from 17th Street to 25th Street.
Existing Condition
Project Benefits
- Pomeroy adopted a complete streets ordinance in May 2016 and has since and has since had a high commitment for creating streets that are safe to travel for motorists and pedestrians alike. In the spring of 2024, the city adopted an updated six-year transportation plan targeting areas that are in the most need for repair and improvements to create safe corridors for all. At the top of the list is this sidewalk along US-12 from the intersection of 17th and Main Street to the new Dollar General. This is a 3500-foot stretch of road with no sidewalk in which vehicles are traveling at 35+ mph. Pedestrian presence has increased notably with new businesses and residential areas. The best solution is to expand the current sidewalk infrastructure and network east to include this stretch of the City. The proposed sidewalk would be set back from the current shoulder with existing or new curb and gutter (if needed) and ADA compliant curb ramps for each road crossing in this segment. This solution aims to create a dedicated path for pedestrians who walk this corridor moving them off the shoulder of the road and decreasing risk for vehicle and pedestrian collisions. This project will close an existing sidewalk gap in the Citys network and main downtown area, which has been a primary focus of the Complete Streets focus for the City. Students in the project area currently need to be bused to school due to a lack of a safe walking path.
