Existing ConditionsThis intersection of Union Avenue and Rainier Street is currently stop controlled on the Rainier Street and Martin Street legs of the intersection, with free flow traffic movement on Union Avenue. On the north leg of this intersection, Union Avenue is divided by a median to separate the Pierce County Ferry loading lanes from the north-south traffic lanes. There exists an unsafe crossing movement where vehicles headed north bound to the ferry loading lanes cross head on with south-bound traffic on Union Avenue. The construction of a 5-legged roundabout will significantly reduce if not eliminate the potential for head on collisions at this intersection. |

Summary of Improvements
- The purpose of this project is to improve safety and congestion at the Union Avenue/Rainier Street/Martin Street intersection and the Pierce County Ferry loading lanes. The roundabout is expected to improve the capacity of the intersection and to reduce congestion and vehicle stacking, without adding traffic lanes. Traffic volumes were modeled, see the attached analysis.
