Existing ConditionsS 288th Street was identified as a potential road diet project with the City's adoption of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan in 2015. It is heavily used by bicyclists and pedestrians from low-income neighborhoods to access Thomas Jefferson High School. From 2017 through 219, 147 collisions have occurred within the project limits with 74 injuries (6 of which involved pedestrians), and 2 fatalities both of which involved pedestrians). King County had completed a road diet on their portion of the street east of 34th Avenue S in 2017. In addition, the City is funding the development of a north-south trail paralleling SR 99 that would temporarily terminate at 16th Avenue S and S 288th Street. |

Description of Improvements
The City proposes to provide a continuous bicycle and pedestrian route between the trailhead at 16th Avenue S and 34th Avenue S, meeting all ADA requirements. The project would include the construction of 3 mid-block pedestrian crosswalks with pedestrian refuge islands and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, replacement of the traffic signal at Military Road S to comply with MUTCD and ADA requirements with the revised channelization, and traffic signal modifications at SR 99 to improve efficency and reduce delays for non-motorized users.
