Existing Conditions

The Gravelly Lake exit off of I-5 is one of three principle access points to the City of Lakewood. Gravelly Lake Drive (GLD) is the primary means of accessing the Lake City area of Lakewood, Fort Steilacoom Park, American Lake Park, the Veterans Administration and Hospital, Lakes High School and Pierce College. Additionally, GLD is a primary route to access Lakewold Gardens and the Downtown Business District as well as a back route through Washington Blvd to the Town of Steilacoom. At this time the roadways only have vehicle lanes with some shoulders and three major traffic signal intersections with a long history of accidents. The route has historically experienced traffic delays due to the signals and no amount of signal coordination has been able to address the situation. Non-motorized users do not have a dedicated travel way (no sidewalks or bike facilities).

Description of Improvements

The Community and Council have identified these two corridors (Gravelly Lake and Washington Blvd) as important principal arterials to bring up to a complete street standard and means to drive economic improvements to this historically under served part of Lakewood. The Council has committed general obligation bond funds, as identified in the City's current budget, to improve Veterans Drive from the VA Hospital entrance to GLD as well as fund design of GLD improvements and WA Blvd improvements. This project will result in a complete street rebuild of the existing roadway on GLD from just north of Pacific Highway to Washington Blvd then west through the Interlaaken intersection, a notoriously bad intersection due to proximity to WA Blvd and GLD intersection and sight distance challenges. This would include a shared use path on the lake side of Gravelly Lake Dr. and a six foot walk on the opposite side of the road. For Washington Blvd. SW this would be traditional sidewalk and bike lanes on both sides of the road. The signalized intersections through this corridor are at the end of their life, the replacement will be round-a-bouts at all current signalized intersections. The project connects to the newly completed sidewalks and shared use paths on Veterans Drive and the north part of GLD which connects to the Downtown COLI. Further, construction of this project will provide sidewalk connectivity to future improvements WSDOT is currently in the process of designing and securing rights-of-way to connect Gravelly Lk. Drive at Pacific Highway to the Tillicum/Woodbrook neighborhoods providing even more connectivity to important features in Lakewood.
