Construction funds are needed to build an up to date principal arterial in this corridor that will close the gap between recently completed bicycle and pedestrian facilities in the Town of Steilacoom and soon to be completed improvements in the City of Lakewood. There currently are no safe bicycle facilities through the project limits, and sidewalk gaps throughout create unsafe pedestrian conditions often weaving in and out of parking areas. Nearby Fort Steilacoom Park cannot easily and safely be accessed by cyclists. Existing street lighting is either sparse mounted to utility poles with uneven spacing, or limited to intersections. Steilacoom Boulevard remains as one of only two major east-west arterials in the City of Lakewood and still accommodates high traffic volumes in its sub standard-present state. Fronting property uses include elementary education, major recreational facilities, state hospital and a variety of businesses.
