The City seeks to improve pedestrian safety at locations prioritized by Council-adopted policy. This is an annual program that the City has successfully implemented over the last 15 years with a combination of local funding, grants, and private development improvements. Location 1) 1st Way S and S 340th Street First Way S is 4 lanes with a speed limit of 35 and ADT of 16,000. This mid-block crossing is over 1/4 mile away from the nearest protected crossing in either direction and is adjacent to Metro Route 903 transit stops. Area the includes high-density housing, public library, office space, retail, and two assisted living facilities. Location 2) Weyerhaeuser Way south of S 344th St is a 3-lane major collector with a speed limit of 35 and ADT of 11,000. The site is located at transit stops for Pierce Transit Route 501 and is over 1,100 ft from the nearest protected crossing. This location serves businesses, an elementary school, a church, a park, and two CTR-affected worksites.

Project Description
Install mid-block crossing treatments with rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) and median refuge islands. The project will install RRFBs in two priority locations 1)1st Way S and S 340th St (North Leg), and 2) Weyerhaeuser Way and S 344th St (600 ft. South). Both locations will construct ADA compliant ramps, RRFBs, refuge islands to cut crossing distance to half-at-a-time, and illumination.
