The City of Kirkland adopted the development of a Safer Routes to School Action Plan for each neighborhood in Kirkland as a part of the Citys 2019-2020 Work Program. Over a period of months, almost 4,000 residents followed the process or participated in developing a list of potential areas that would benefit from safety improvements. To gather this input, City staff attended 30 neighborhood association meetings, nine walk and bike to school events, numerous community events, and conducted online outreach. Out of this community engagement, the final action plan identifies four sidewalk gaps along one of Kirklands busiest transit arterials (132nd Avenue NE) as high priority. The community will benefit from a safer and less obstructed pedestrian connection that is just south of Lake Washington Technical Institute, and east of Mark Twain Elementary.

Project Description
This project will construct 1,875 lineal feet of curb, gutter and sidewalk with a planter strip along the west side of 132nd Avenue NE from NE 110th PL to NE 97th ST, adjacent to Mark Twain Park. The sidewalk will fill four missing gaps between 110th PL and NE 97th ST, connecting priority sidewalk access just south of Lake Washington Technical Institute. The sidewalk will be 5 feet wide and will be separated from the travel lane by a 4.5 foot planter strip and 0.5 foot wide cement concrete curb.
