Project Description

Imminent conflict, with vulnerable transportation users on this otherwise narrow, rural, freight road with no shoulders, bike lanes, or sidewalks, can be mitigated with this project. OIE highway is one of two well-traveled truck routes used to bring produce from nearby farms to the Citys food processing facilities, allowing local and regional freight movement without adding trips on nearby I-82. Completion of the project will improve the structural load carrying capability for OIE Highway, eliminating the need for load and width limits in the project area. The lighting, curb, bike lane, and gutter improvements will make cyclist and pedestrian movements attractive when the Prosser School District improves its property near OIE Highway and Albro Road. Providing active transportation options may reduce future motorized congestion and promote active, healthy communities on a roadway with no current pedestrian or bicycle facilities in place.
