The existing streets currently have a paved shoulder of 2 feet. At most locations the ground slopes steeply beyond the pavement edge making it difficult to safely accommodate pedestrians outside of traveled way. When snow is present the problem is worse. Un-controlled on-street parking adds to this problem as well. This sidewalk connection was identified by the Towns Non-Motorized Transportation Plan as a high priority to make this connection between previously constructed sidewalk and trail improvements. The proposed sidewalks provide a safe ADA accessible pedestrian corridor separated from traffic that connects existing sidewalks and provides pedestrian connectivity between the Central Business District (CBD), residential area, tourist facilities including a campground and museum. The sidewalk will also serve as a pedestrian bypass for hte congested SR 20 corridor one block south. The project will also install an infiltration storm drainage system minimizing runoff and erosion.
