The City of Anacortes has been working towards an implementation of our South Commercial Avenue Corridor Plan (April 2016). Our goals for this plan are economic development, health equity, safer and more connected non-motorized facilities and increased safety for all users. The 12th Street and Commercial Avenue is a busy intersection where the State Highway serving the WSDOT Anacortes Ferry Terminal turns from North/South direction to West/East direction. There are quite a few pedestrians despite very poor ADA facilities at the intersection. There was a pedestrian fatality there in March 2017. The intersection is a gateway into downtown Anacortes. In short, Anacortes wants safe, usable facilities for all of the users of the roadway and sidewalk system, not just automobile drivers.
