Reith Road is a critical, multimodal corridor connecting downtown Kent and Kent’s West Hill. Route 183 serves two King County Metro bus stops within the project limits and connects the Federal Way Transit Center, Star Lake Park and Ride (future Star Lake Link Light Rail Station), and Kent Station. The bus stop at S 253rd Street serves neighborhoods to the east and west as well as a high-density apartment complex. This intersection currently has a marked crosswalk. The bus stop at Lake Fenwick Road serves multiple, high-density apartment complexes north and south of the bus stops. This intersection does not have marked crosswalks for pedestrians to access the bus stops. From just east of Lake Fenwick Road and just north of S 253rd Street, the roadway is currently 4 lanes with a five-foot sidewalk and planting strip on both sides. Between Lake Fenwick Road and S 253rd Street, bicyclists must share the lane with vehicular traffic. The roadway has a significant grade up to 10% and a speed limit of 35.

Project Description
The project adds single lane roundabouts at S 253rd St and W Fenwick Rd and enhanced pedestrian crossing facilities are proposed to address a crash history that includes pedestrian involved crashes as well as crashes at these intersections. Between Lake Fenwick Road and S 253rd Street, the cross section will be updated to include separated bike lanes, one travel lane in each direction, and a median curb. Today, bicyclists share the lane with fast moving traffic. The protected bike lanes will separate bicyclists from fast vehicles, buses, and freight. The median curb will eliminate cross-over crashes.

Project Benefits
- Transportation Master Plan outreach identified Reith Rd as critical for connectivity to downtown, high-capacity transit, bus stops, and recreation. This project improves access to positively impact safety/quality of life/opportunities. Public comments (Kent’s 311 reporting system/direct call) include requests for enhanced pedestrian crossings, traffic calming, and intersection improvements.
