The SR 164 Corridor Planning Study (2010) identified the need for improvements to this section of the corridor to accommodate the change from predominantly rural and agricultural uses to a mix of rural, agricultural, and suburban uses as a result of increased residential and commercial development. Since completion of the study, the need to provide additional capacity on the SR 164 has continued to grow, with 2022 average daily volumes of 24,000 vehicles per day, and peak hour volumes approaching the capacity of a single vehicle lane. The sidewalks are needed to provide active transportation opportunities to residents and businesses along the corridor, and to improve access to transit.

Project Description
This project widens Auburn Way S (SR 164) from Hemlock Street to Poplar Street SE to provide a five-lane section with a center turn lane/median.The project also implements specific improvements improving the safety of school bus stops adding sidewalks to accommodate non-motorized travel, installing access control to improve safety and operations, and improving transit facilities. A pedestrian crossing, enhanced with an RRFB is proposed at the east end of the improvements after the transition back to the existing three-lane section to provide pedestrian circulation and access to transit. The project will also realign Poplar St SE to the west of the existing intersection with SR 164 to provide adequate sight distance at the intersection.
