'The Canyon Rd. E. corridor, which connects the Port of Tacoma Manufacturing Industrial Center (MIC) to the Frederickson MIC, terminates at the southern boundary of Frederickson. However, significant freight and commuter traffic enters Frederickson and the Canyon Rd. E. corridor from southern portions of Pierce County. For lack of a principle arterial these trips are absorbed by several collectors and minor arterials which are meant to service residential areas, causing congestion and level of service challenges. As the region grows and Frederickson MIC matures this access point will become increasingly important. Pierce County's southern business community and workforce requires efficient options for utilizing the economic resources that Frederickson offers, and Pierce County is committed to infrastructure and network improvements that enhance growth in this vital employment center.'

Project Description
Extend Canyon Road E from 200th St E to 208th St E. The project will provide two through-lanes and a continuous two-way left-turn lane by constructing the western half of the ultimate five lane roadway section. The work will include curb, gutter, and sidewalk on the western side, paved shoulders, stormwater facilities, illumination, new traffic signal systems at 200th St E and 208th St E and realignment of the 200th St E intersection. The project implements a right-sized solution to the corridor's immediate challenges, while also accomodating a future widening project to complete the eastern half of the ultimate five lane roadway section. (See Att. L for roadway sections).

Project Benefits
- The new principle arterial will divert freight and commuter traffic away from the current alternative routes, and provide additional capacity on Canyon Rd. E., enhancing safety and alleviating level of service problems. The improvements will reduce approach delay at Canyon Rd. E. and 200th St. E. by 50%. Delays for congested northbound movements at nearby intersections will similarly reduce by more than 80%. (See Att. J for LOS data summary and Att. A for further discussion).
