Existing Conditions

Several accidents have occurred in recent years along Grandview Drive between 35th Street and 37th Street including a fatality and several serious injuries. The primary cause of these accidents has been vehicle speeds and limited sight distances. Vehicle speeds often exceed the posted speed limit of 30 mph in this curve with an 85% speed near 40 mph. Grandview Drive has a curve along this stretch between 37th and 35th Streets which creates limited sight distances, especially with vehicles travelling over the 30 mph speed limit. Grandview is a busy collector arterial which serves a primary school to the north (at 29th and GV) and Curtis Jr High school to the south (3800 block). Access out of the Jr High School is limited to right out, which creates a demand for U-turns in the area of 36th Street. I addition 36th Street is a skewed intersection that has also adds to the sight distance issues and has contributed to many accidents over the years. Sidewalks exist along the route, however they do not meet current ADA standards.
