Existing Conditions

The 122nd Ave E/ Military Rd E/ Shaw Rd E/ corridor is the only County-owned north-south roadway in the South Hill area, and a critical arterial route for commuters and business connecting dense urban residential areas to jobs and economic centers. In 2016, the segment of 122nd Ave E between 144th St E and 136th St E failed to meet concurrency for the first time. In addition to being a popular route to bypass the heavily congested SR-161, 122nd Ave E directly serves multiple residential areas and housing developments (both existing and proposed) and is the most direct route to access SR-167, SR-165, and the City of Puyallup amongst other destinations. As the unprecedented rate of residential development continues in the South Hill area, undoubtedly the roadway congestion will only increase unless we can increase the capacity to existing roadways by adding lanes and improving traffic signals. With additional vehicle traffic, there is also a concern of increased conflicts with bicycles and pedestrians as no separate facilities currently exist for active transportation services.

Description of Improvements

The project will widen the existing two-lane roadway to accommodate two southbound through lanes, a two-way left turn lane, and one northbound through lane. Other improvements include five-foot paved shoulders, cement concrete curb and gutter, 6-foot-wide cement concrete sidewalks, an enclosed storm drainage system, water quality and flow control stormwater facilities, illumination, and replacing the existing traffic signal systems at the 122nd Avenue East / 144th Street East and 22nd Avenue East / 136th Street East intersections. This project is the first of three phases to relieve congestion on 122nd Avenue East. The widening of 122nd Ave E will add capacity, reduce the bottleneck at 144th St E, create space for bicyclists and pedestrians, improve travel times, and increase safety to potentially reduce accidents within the project limits.
