Existing Conditions

7th Avenue N is classified as a collector with existing sidewalk on both sides of the street.Most of the curb ramps along this stretch are not ADA compliant. This corridor is a key pedestrian corridor due to its flat topography compared to many other stretches in Edmonds. 7th Avenue N creates many connections between residential cross streets and Downtown Edmonds (including Frances Anderson Center / Edmonds Library), the new City Park between Bell St. and Daley St., Holy Rosary Church and School,and the existing Community Transit bus stops along Caspers St. SR-524 and Main St. Kids are walking to /from the school to reach the school grounds. Many pedestrians historically use this corridor on a daily basis to reach these locations and those numbers have increased dramatically over the last three years since the opening of the City Park. The street crossing in front of entrance to the new City Park has safety issues due to the limited sight distance.

Summary of Improvements

  • The ADA Curb Ramp upgrades will make this popular pedestrian corridor accessible to the elderly and individuals with disabilities. The addition of bulb-outs and a curb island will protect pedestrians in multiple ways by providing addition sight distance from approaching motorists. Firstly these elements will provide a refuge away from sidewalk from which pedestrians can better see - and be seen by - motorists using the corridor. Additionally, the presence of bulb-outs will reduce traffic speeds traveled by approximately 3,500 vehicles per day.

Description of Improvements

The project will install 10 ADA compliant curb ramps along 7th Avenue N, as well as bulb-outs / curb islands on both sides of the existing mid-block crossing in front to the City Park.
