Existing Conditions

No pedestrian facilities exist on this heavily used segment of roadway from 56th Street to Hunt Street. This segment of sidewalk has been prioritized by the city due to a long-overdue need for pedestrian and bicycle facilities along the 38th Avenue corridor. This particular roadway segment is heavily used by pedestrians, cyclists, and has multiple bus stops for elementary, middle, and high school aged kids. The high pedestrian traffic is proven by a well defined footpath along the shoulder of the unimproved road. This roadway segment has no illumination, which is a danger to vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists when it is dark. This road segment has no safe pedestrian crossings, which are much needed for pedestrians and school aged children. This project is part of an overall phased approach by the city to have continuous sidewalks from Hunt Street (north city limits on 38th Avenue to south city limits. The city has already completed the southern phase.

Description of Improvements

This project will increase safety and connect the 38th Avenue corridor to adjacent PARs by installing sidewalk, bike lane, and roadway lighting. Not only will non-vehicular travelers have increased safety with a new sidewalk (separated in places) and bike lane, but system continuity will be achieved by improving this roadway section to match improvements made in 2022 at the southern end of 38th Avenue. There are two roadway sections due to community input to save significant trees. Segment 2 does not feature a landscaping strip to preserve mature trees. The project will add much needed pedestrian RRFB crosswalks in the corridor.
