Existing Conditions

The Transportation System Plan identifies the entire corridor on the Primary Pedestrian Network and Enhanced Transit Network but most of the corridor has narrow sidewalks (less than six-feet wide) directly adjacent to traffic. There are large gaps between marked crossings and frequent driveways to businesses along the corridor. This portion of the corridor (39th Street to Discovery Trail) is also on the Citys Bike and Small Mobility Network but there are currently no easy or comfortable connection for people walking, biking or using small mobility devices along this segment.

Summary of Improvements

  • The project will remove one through northbound lane between 29th Street and the I-5 interchange providing space for median islands at crossings along Main Street, a multi-use path between 40th Street and the Discovery Trail and slightly widening other travel lanes to fit C-TRAN BRT buses. New marked crossings will fill the large gaps between crossings and meet the Citys guidelines for crosswalk spacing. Median refuge islands will be added to crossings to help calm traffic and allow pedestrians to cross one direction of traffic at a time. A new multi-use path (between 40th Street and the Discovery Trail) will fill the existing sidewalk gap just south of 45th Street and provide a safer more comfortable connection between regional trails and the local bike and small mobility network. A southbound mobility lane on Main Street between 40th Street and 39th Street, new mobility lanes along 40th Street and improvements to the 39th Street and F Street intersection will be added to support access to this multi-use path. Improvements to the 39th Street and F Street intersection will include two crossings (one for pedestrians and one of bicyclists), partial diverters and a rapid flashing beacon.

Description of Improvements

The Project aims to improve pedestrian safety, bike and small mobility connectivity, and access to transit stops with crossing improvements and a new multi-use path connection.
