Existing Conditions

The Riverview School District / Cherry Valley Elementary School has reached out the City multiple times about improving the school crossing at 3rd Avenue NE and NE 163rd St. Children use this crossing is the primary entrance to Cherry Valley Elementary before and after school and we have been informed by the school that people often fail to stop at the crosswalk. This is likely due the sharp curvature of 3rd Avenue heading South, causing a sight distance issue to the crosswalk.

Description of Improvements

The project adds RRFBs at the intersection and an additional RRFB on 3rd Avenue NE North of the intersection around the blind curve. This will allow for drivers approaching the intersection to be aware of the pedestrians crossing before they can even see the intersection. Additionally, we are proposing retrofitting the curb ramp at the southeast corner and adding a curb extension to reduce the crossing length and narrow 3rd Avenue NE.
