Existing Conditions

The proposed project is one of two remaining segments for the non-motorized connection between I-5 and the north portion of the City of Lakewood, tying to the Oakbrook neighborhood community located at the northern boundary city limits. The second of the two segments is another proposed project that extends this Interlaaken Drive Sidewalk project west and north along 112th St SW and Idlewild Rd SW, respectively. The City has recently completed the Washington Boulevard and Gravelly Lake Drive projects, which originate from I-5, and is currently completing the Hipkins Rd SW street improvement project which provides connection north to Steilacoom Blvd. Existing conditions within the corridor include two lanes and walking paths where shoulders are available. However, there are large sections of Interlaaken Drive where there is no available shoulder and pedestrians are left no choice but to walk along the road. Bicyclists are also challenged by existing 11 travel lanes without shoulders.

Description of Improvements

This project will include complete street elements by constructing new curbs, gutter, and sidewalks on both sides, repaving the existing wearing course, bringing streetlighting up to design standards, and replacing storm drainage. Non-motorized travel will be available through the central section of the City from the south to the north city limits which includes direct access to an elementary school (Idlewild) and high school (Lakes).
