Existing Conditions
Fruitvale Boulevard is the old State Route 12, and is classified as an Urban Principal Arterial, and a T-2 corridor. Less than 100 feet south of the Fruitvale Boulevard and 34th Avenue intersection, 34th Avenue intersects with River Road (classified as a Major Collector and T-2 corridor.) River Road provides sole access to many of the newer fruit packing and processing facilities, due to close access to US 12, I 82, and the Central Washington Railroad rail line. With the addition of cold storage facilities in the last decade, packing operations occur year-round, so heavy truck traffic and delays are no longer seasonal. Additionally hop processing plants, multi-family housing, and other commercial properties are located further down River Road towards 16th Avenue. With commercial trucking as the primary means of agricultural product movement in Yakima, improving mobility of freight movement in this agricultural business area is important to the community. The geometry of the intersections is challenging because of the skewed angle of Fruitvale Boulevard relative to River Road and N. 34th Ave. It is further complicated by the close proximity of the 2 intersections, and the lack of access control to the adjacent properties on the south side of the intersection. This location which includes two 3-legged intersections, within 100 feet, is very congested, confusing to drivers, and has a history of serious and fatal collisions.
