Existing Conditions

Marvin Road SE is in a rapidly growing area of Thurston County and provides a critical link to Interstate 5 for service members, employees and families traveling to and from Joint Base Lewis McChord and the Interstate 5 corridor. The growth and the corresponding dramatic increase in traffic has strained the road system, to the point where the volume of traffic has exceeded the transportation capacity limits and already the corridor does not meet concurrency requirements. Without needed roadway improvements, future planned development on the corridor will be restricted, congestion will increase, and have a marked impact on an already limited housing supply.

Description of Improvements

Converting a stop controlled intersection at 19th Ave to a roundabout to improve minor street access and reduce the side street delay that is creating concurrency issues. Access control is proposed between 19th Ave. and Union Mills Rd with a northbound turn lane provided at Union Mills Rd. Bike lanes and pedestrian facilities will be incorporated into the design. Continuous street lighting will be provided along with rectangular rapid flashing beacons on the roundabout crosswalks to improve access for multi-modal corridor users.
