Existing Conditions59th Avenue is a collector arterial in the heart of Lakewoods Central Business District. Lakewood invested over $300k in the reconstruction of 59th Avenue between 100th Street and Bridgeport Way in 2015. Improvements included full roadway reconstruction, storm improvements and the installation of curb and gutter. The surrounding area is a diverse community offering multi family, commercial, retail, medical, recreational, transit, and government amenities. Pierce Transit Route 48 provides hourly service with 2 north bound and 2 south bound stops located within the project limits. The area has experienced a recent surge in redevelopment and it is anticipated the trend will continue. The area abutting this project to the east is an established single family residential neighborhood with little pressure to redevelop and little hope to precipitate frontage improvements. As density continues to increase so does the need for complete and effective multimodal facilities. |

This project will complete the gap in multimodal facilities along 59th Avenue S. The work completes the sidewalk (and bus stops) between the intersections. Intersection improvements at the project termini are complete and meet ADA standard. Several utility poles will be relocated by the utility purveyors at their cost prior to the start of project construction. This project completes a significant pedestrian facility gap within the heart of the central business district .
