Existing ConditionsThis project fills the missing link of sidewalk between 2nd St and 3rd St along the east side of SR 525, in an existing sidewalk system that is otherwise unbroken for a third of a mile. By filling in this gap, two pedestrian-heavy areas of Mukilteo will be connected. North of the gap, there is the Ferry Terminal, Sound Transit Sounder, Lighthouse Park (which has over 1 million visitors annually) and water front businesses. South of the gap, there is the Old Town business district, fire station, community center and other small shops and businesses. A small park is located within the gap. Currently, pedestrians must cross this gap by walking along the narrow shoulder, in the grass, or risk crossing the street without a crosswalk. There is an existing sidewalk along the west side of SR 525, however the nearest crosswalk is two blocks north or south of the project limits, and all pedestrian generators are on the east side. It is not assumed to be the existing pedestrian route. |

The City proposes to enhance pedestrian mobility and safety by constructing a cement concrete sidewalk between 2nd St and 3rd St, thereby closing the existing gap in pedestrian facilities. This will provide an ADA compliant route, and encourage all pedestrians to use the new sidewalk instead of walking along the narrow shoulder or walking through the grass. This project will tie in with a planned WSDOT project, currently at 100% design with funding already secured for construction, which would continue pedestrian facility improvements north of the project limits to the ferry terminal. These improvements include widening the sidewalk on the SR 525 bridge north of 2nd St from 3 feet to 7.5 feet wide, construction of curb ramps at both the northeast and southeast corners of 2nd St (tying in with the proposed project), and the addition of pedestrian stairways from both the east and west sides of the bridge down to pedestrian pathways beneath the bridge leading to Lighthouse Park.
