Accessible pedestrian facilities in the Town of Wilkeson have improved incrementally in past years. Most sidewalks in Wilkeson have ADA-accessible curb ramps, but Railroad Avenue is an exception there is currently no complete ADA-accessible route that pedestrians can use to reach Wilkeson Elementary School at the southeastern end of the city. While the primary route to the school along Railroad Avenue features sidewalks that are largely ADA-compliant, there are many curb ramps along the road that do not meet ADA standards, creating obstacles and complicating access for children, parents, and other pedestrians with impaired mobility. Some curb ramps on Railroad Avenue have been replaced as part of frontage improvements and as part of various Town projects, though this represents a piecemeal approach to pedestrian mobility and safety to date, there has not been a comprehensive effort to address pedestrian mobility in the vicinity of the school.

Project Description
Completing the curb ramps on Railroad Avenue is a crucial and cost-effective means of integrating Railroad Avenue as part of Wilkesons developing network of pedestrian infrastructure. This project plans to replace the 8 non-compliant curb ramps on Railroad Avenue in addition to building 1 new curb ramp in front of Wilkeson Elementary School. Asphalt pavement repair will be performed in the roadway for the two crossings at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Cedar Street. All pedestrian crossings and intersections along the roadway would be compliant with ADA standards as a result of this process, allowing Railroad Avenue to link with the existing pedestrian infrastructure on Church Street and function as part of an accessible pedestrian route through Wilkeson.
