Project Description

Construct a pedestrian path along the west side of 132nd Avenue SE where sidewalk does not currently exist, include ADA-compliant curb-ramps and pavement improvements.

Existing Condition

The roadway was constructed prior to annexation into Kent, with many segments lacking a separated walkway or sidewalk. Adding pedestrian pathway to this segment of 132nd Ave SE is identified in the Kent Transportation Master Plan (TMP 2021) and TIP. A pedestrian connection is needed in this location to better serve neighborhood connections to services at the intersection of Kent Kangley Road and 132nd Ave SE. The project was designed in partnership with King County Metro as an Access to Transit project. This project would provide better first/last mile connections to Metro Route 165, one of the more heavily utilized routes in South King County. Metro funded the design of the project in partnership with the City.

Project Benefits

  • The project improves the roadway on the west side of the street with more comfortable space, buffered for walkers, bicyclists and rollers, completing the link to the sidewalk network at the north end, and to the neighborhood at the south end. The south end of the project will also tie to an RRFB crossing at SE 278th Pl (funded by TIB) that is scheduled for construction in 2024. The pathway will be buffered from the travel lanes by an existing vegetated stormwater swale. King County Metro Transit (KCMT) provides frequent, fixed-route transit service to the 132nd Ave SE corridor in this segment with a stop located at the south (represented in project images). There is no paved landing for southbound stop, making it less comfortable for transit users. The project includes an all-weather pathway buffered from travel lanes.
