The existing bridge is very narrow and does not have shoulders or bike lanes, resulting in bicyclists and pedestrians entering the busy collector street with growing traffic volumes to cross the canal.

Project Description
This project addresses a critical gap in the sidewalk system by installing a multiuse facility (box culvert or prefab bridge) on the west side of Road 44 where the roadway crosses the FCID canal.
Existing Condition
Project Benefits
- This project addresses a critical gap along Road 44 where the roadway crosses the FCID canal. The existing culvert is only slightly wider than the paved roadway and does not allow for a sidewalk. Continuous sidewalks have been constructed on the west side of Road 44 to the north and south of the canal as part of past developments, but these sidewalks terminate at the canals edge, forcing users to enter the traffic lane to navigate the canal crossing. Since Ben Franklin Transit serves bus stops to the north and south of the project, this missing connection will increase access and connectivity for those who rely on public transit. Additionally, this project provides a dedicated travel path from the many homes to the north that connects to a regional multiuse trail in State right-of-way to the southwest of the project. The proposed improvement will extend or replace the existing box culvert to accommodate a shared use facility on the west side of Road 44. Safety railings and proper sidewalk tie-ins will be included to create an ADA-compliant multi-use connection. As part of project development, the City will also evaluate prefabricated bridge alternatives for spanning the canal. A prefabricated bridge may provide similar connectivity benefits at a potentially lower cost, but additional engineering and geotechnical investigations are required to fully assess feasibility.
