The project will redevelop the 56th Ave W corridor between 232nd St SW and 236th St SW. The project area consists primarily of single-family homes, one-story businesses, and a wide road without bike lanes. The sidewalks are narrow and constructed at or near the curb without ADA compliant curb ramps driveways with steep cross-slopes. 56th Ave W is an arterial that connects to the Mountlake Terrace light rail station via 236th St SW. The lack of ADA accessible sidewalks, no designated bike lanes, and increasing vehicle traffic creates an unpredictable environment that discourages walking, biking, and other alternative transportation options. With the opening of the Station and the Washington State Middle Housing Bill, the area immediately adjacent to the project has a projected population growth of 13,424 residents. There is also a 43% increase expected in daily traffic levels. This creates a need for more sustainable multimodal transportation options to the public. During reconstruction, this project also provides for upgrades to lighting, traffic signal, stormwater, sewer and water infrastructure providing additional capacity, safety, water quality and resiliency. Overall, this project is needed to provide the community with much needed multimodal transportation options, infrastructure upgrades to support Town Center zoning, and environmental improvements to to meet Dept of Ecology criteria.

Project Description
Following Complete Streets principles, the city will provide an ADA accessible route between Town Center and the Transit Center. Project proposes to widen sidewalks and amenity zones on the west side between 236th St SW and 234th St SW, and both sides between 234th St SW and 232nd St SW. The existing traffic signal at 232nd St SW will be updated to improve efficiency and meet current MUTCD standards. Roadway lighting will be revised to meet current criteria. Channelization on 56th Ave W will be reconfigured to include a continuous left turn lane and Class II bike lanes. This will calm speeds, improve turning movements, enhance safety, and assist pedestrians crossing 56th Ave W. A joint utility trench will be installed to provide the infrastructure for utilities to relocate electrical and communications underground. Class II bike lanes on 56th Ave W will contribute to an expected modal shift of almost 6,000 VMTs annually. Reconstruction of existing sidewalks with ADA Accessible curb ramps with safer accessible routes and crossings. The crossings will include crosswalk markings and signs. Bus zones along 56th Ave W will be relocated to far side locations with space for future bus shelters. Updates to sewer and water infrastructure will increase capacity and resiliency. Stormwater will be conveyed to a regional infiltration facility and another infiltration gallery to improve water quality.
