Existing Conditions

The City of Camas has grown to include over 4,700 acres of land north of the NE Lake Road and NE Everett Street (SR 500) intersection which includes commercial development, popular recreational facilities, schools, and rapidly developing residential areas. This intersection provides an important transportation link between north and south halves of the city. Traffic volumes have increased driving the LOS down to unacceptable levels. Peak hour traffic commonly backs up 0.3 to 0.5 miles from the intersection in all directions. Intersection throughput is hampered by alignment issues and very limited space for turn pocket storage. Continued development of the north half of the City will not be able to occur without improvements to the intersection.

Description of Improvements

This project will replace a signal that has been overwhelmed by city growth and replace it with a roundabout. The roundabout addresses current shortcomings in intersection throughput by reducing or eliminating the need for turnpocket storage. Maintaining continual traffic flow will eliminate congestion that has caused daily backups of 0.3 to 0.5 miles to the north and west of the intersection. The project will further enhance safety and pedestrian and bike access, and connectivity by adding bike lanes, multi-use paths, two-way left turn lanes south of the intersection, illumination, landscaping and other related improvements.
