Existing Conditions

There are community safety and economic needs directly tied to this project. The intersection of Market Street, F Street and Fuller Way is an offset signalized intersection with 5 approaches that has experienced 12 crashes over the past 3 year. Four of those crashes are designated as possible injury with one of the four being a crash involving a bicyle and vehicle. The offset intersection has additional phases to accommodate the 5 approaches that adds to intersection delay and causes driver expectation issues that have led to a high number of crashes at the intersection. Market Street has been restriped to include bike lanes to the west of the project limts, but the bike lanes terminate prior to the intersection requiring bicyclists to take a lane to navigate through the intersection where drivers are experiencing confusion with the multiple signal phases. The City is currently designing the Grays Harbor Gateway Center that will be located adjacent to this intersection. Well-defined, safe access that encourages multi-modal activity is critical to the success of the Gateway Center.

Description of Improvements

(Safety Need) - The existing offset intersection is being converted to a single lane roundabout to accommodate the 5 approaches and eliminate the offset signalized intersection. The roundabout will result in slower speeds through the intersection and provide dedicated multi-modal facilities that will provide well-defined, safe access routes through the intersection. A majority of the crashes experienced at the intersection include vehicles traveling in opposite directions or rear-end crashes. Roundabouts are effective countermeasures for these types of crashes. (Economic Need) - The City of Aberdeen is currently designing the Grays Harbor Gateway Center that will be located adjacent to this intersection. More than 1,000 community members participated in the design of the Gateway Center building. The Gateway Center will provide a one-stop shop for any local business to launch or grow as well as any new businesses looking to relocate to Grays Harbor County. Economic growth in Aberdeen has been challenging with local business closing or moving to other areas and the community understands the value that the Gateway Center will bring to the local economy. This intersection improvement project is vital to the success of the Gateway Center as it will provide a safe and inviting downtown area that encourages multi-modal activity, and efficient access for those visting the Gateway Center.
