Existing Conditions

The project will improve a potentially hazardous collector. Currently, 46th Avenue is heavily used by all modes of transportation including motorists, school buses, transit buses, pedestrians and bicyclists. Children walking and riding bikes to Robert Gray Elementary, along 46th Avenue, are forced to travel in the roadway or through open ditches and front yards. The street is a built-up macadam surface over native soils. There are steep slopes that drop into some front yards. There are no stormwater features. No curb, gutter or sidewalk. The section is 20-feet wide with little to no shoulder. Improvement of this 1/3 mile section of street would connect the commercial zone along SR 4 with the neighborhoods and Robert Gray Elementary School to the north.

Description of Improvements

Reconstruct 46th Avenue to include curb, gutter, sidewalks, bike lanes as well as a travel way for cars. The street profile will be lowered selectively to eliminate hazardous slopes. The street will be built to the City’s standard depth roadway section and include a modern stormwater system. Additionally the project will replace the existing 46th Avenue bridge over the CDID cutoff slough with a culvert or multi-plate arch. Existing water and sewer main lines will be replaced.
