Region: Puget Sound | Legislative District: 33 | Length: 3,100.00 ft. | FY 2021 Sidewalk Program (SP) |
Existing ConditionsThe Maywood neighborhood lacks a safe pedestrian connection to nearby destinations such as the Des Moines Creek Trail and the Angle Lake Light Rail station to the east and King County Metro bus stops as well as an elementary school and a high school to the west. Pedestrians currently use the shoulder along the south side of S.200th Street which does not provide protection from traffic and has numerous obstacles. Approximately 900 of shoulder is improved with curb and gutter but the shoulder is unsurfaced. The remaining 2,200 feet of paved shoulder offer no protection from traffic and contains numerous obstacles including, trees, ditches, signs mailboxes etc.For several years the neighborhoods residents have been advocating for improved pedestrian access to the SeaTac Sidewalk Committee, the project was selected for funding in 2018. |

The project will create a pathway connecting the Maywood neighborhood to several destinations along the S 200th Street corridor from 12th Place South, connecting sidewalk constructed as part of the 2020 South 200th Street Des Moines Memorial Drive Intersection project to the Des Moines Creek Trail Head (approximately 3,100 feet east). Additionally, segment C of the Lakes to Sound Trail is scheduled to complete construction in 2021, further expanding regional pedestrian connectivity. The pathway improvements will include a minimum 10-foot path and bio-swales and pedestrian buffer areas where feasible, a low profile concrete barrier will be provided for traffic separation as needed. Additionally, pedestrian lighting will be installed along the full length of the path, and curb ramps and cross walks will be installed at intersections.
