Existing Conditions

M Street is one of only four north/south streets which cross the SR 18 and BNSF right of ways which bisect Auburn. M Street is a key north-south connection for both vehicular and non-motorized travel, providing both local access and providing a through connection to Downtown Auburn. The corridor connects with Downtown Auburn to the north, the Les Gove Community Campus located west on 12th Street SE, which includes the Auburn Senior Center, Auburn Community and Event Center, King County Library, White River Valley Museum, Farmers Market and Les Gove Park, is located within the walking boundary for Auburn High School, and fronts a King County Housing Authority property. A parallel north/south connection is provided along Auburn Way S, but this is located approximately 0.6 miles to the west. This significantly increases walking distances and travel times for pedestrians, especially those with disabilities, and discourages non-motorized travel in this area of Auburn.

Description of Improvements

South of 12th Street, M Street has narrow sidewalks, with a combination of gaps, obstructions, and other elements which make it non-ADA compliant. From 12th Street to 8th Street, sidewalk is only present along the east side of M Street and has multiple gaps. North of 8th Street, sidewalks were recently added along both sides of M Street. Where sidewalks are missing, pedestrians must either use dirt paths along the sides of the roadway or in the curb lanes during inclement weather or when using motorized wheelchairs. The project will complete gaps in the sidewalk system along both sides of M Street SE between Auburn Way S and 12 Street SE including the relocation of existing utility poles. Between 12th Street SE and 8th Street SE a new sidewalk will be constructed along the west side of M Street SE. The improvements will remove all ADA barriers within the project limits and connect to existing sidewalk along M Street SE north of 8th Street SE.
