Region: East | Legislative District: 12 | Length: 2,500.00 ft. | FY 2023 Small City Sidewalk Program (SCSP) |
Existing ConditionsThe existing streets currently have a paved shoulder of 2 feet. At most locations the ground slopes steeply beyond the pavement edge making it difficult to safely accommodate pedestrians outside of traveled way. When snow is present the problem is worse. Un-controlled on-street parking adds to this problem as well. This sidewalk connection was identified by the Towns Non-Motorized Transportation Plan as a high priority to make this connection between previously constructed sidewalk and trail improvements. The proposed sidewalks provide a safe ADA accessible pedestrian corridor separated from traffic that connects existing sidewalks and provides pedestrian connectivity between the Central Business District (CBD), residential area, tourist facilities including a campground and museum. The sidewalk will also serve as a pedestrian bypass for hte congested SR 20 corridor one block south. The project will also install an infiltration storm drainage system minimizing runoff and erosion. |

The needs described previously will be met by providing curb and gutter and a 5 foot sidewalk along Castle. The Castle section will also include 3 foot buffer area between vehicular traffic and pedestrians. This buffer area will also serve as a storm water swale. At specific locations the buffer/swale width will be reduced to minimize earthwork and retaining wall construction. The Castle section will include a 4 foot shoulder to accommodate bicycles and provide scow storage. Along Corral a 5 foot sidewalk will be constructed with a 10 swale/buffer between the street and sidewalk to increase safety and provide stormwater treatment and storage. On-street parking will be delineated and provided where it is an issue due to overflow parking from downtown and the museum.
