Existing Conditions

Apple Avenue (Road F) serves as a minor collector to multi-family housing, single-family residential, the Royal City School District and to the Central Business District. There is approximately 1,300 linear feet of existing sidewalk adjacent to several existing developments on the west side of Apple Avenue. The distance between Camelia Street and Slate Lane is approximately 3,000 linear feet and is missing several segments of sidewalk due to property that is undeveloped and property that was developed prior to Apple Avenue becoming a city street. The lack of sidewalk along this stretch forces pedestrians to walk in the street or on the gravel shoulder. Given that there are existing residences and that the area is expected to grow in single-family residential developments, the need to complete the sidewalk corridor and provide Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps at intersections to provide ADA-compliant connectivity between streets for pedestrians is significant.

Description of Improvements

This project will fill two gaps in sidewalk of Apple Avenue Ne. The first gap will connect existing sidewalk on Camelia Street NE to the existing sidewalk south of Cherry Street NE. The second gap will connect existing sidewalk north of Poplar Street NE with sidewalk at the intersection of Slate Lane NE and Apple Avenue NE. The sidewalk and ADA-compliant ramps will provide a clear, safe, and accessible route for pedestrians.
