Existing Conditions

Main Ave. is the Citys most used road second to US 395. The business district is along Main Ave. from W. 2nd St. East to Quartzite Loop. When viewing an overhead map, one can see that nearly all of the Citys residents live West of US 395 and in order to get to the commercial and business district the majority of residents use W. Main Ave. to get to E. Main Ave. Main Ave. has a WSDOT functional classification of D334 and is a major connector. Bicyclists frequent W. Main to get to downtown; this usage is anticipated to increase dramatically as the Citys new administration has adopted a Sub-Plan to the Citys Comp. Plan that includes biking and pedestrian trails around Chewelah and all of Main Ave. is included in this plan. In addition to a poor road condition (very thin pavement) and obstructions for pedestrians, the City desires to implement bike lanes throughout the City starting with W. Main Ave. and extending it into E. Main Ave. There are also zero ped facilities West of Bernard.
