Existing Conditions

This project completes a vision started over ten years ago to redevelop a commercial/industrial/business area within the City of Cashmere. Chelan Port District and Crunch Pak invested millions of dollars in developing their property based on anticipated improvements to the local transportation route connecting to Highway 2/97. Chelan County is rebuilding a bridge and plans to improve roadways leading to/from Cashmere and Highway 2/97. TIB funded improvements to the eastern portion of Sunset Highway in 2012. This transportation project improves access and safety for trucks, vehicles and pedestrians in a core commercial/industrial/business area while easing industrial, commercial and heavy truck traffic within the downtown business core and residential areas. The regional significance of this project was acknowledged by Chelan/Douglas Transportation Council with the award of a grant in excess of $900,000.

Description of Improvements

The project reconstructs the unimproved section of Sunset Highway within the City limits with resurfacing the travel lanes and the addition of bike lanes, curb, gutter, sidewalk, illumination, planter strips and storm water management. Plantings and the Colonial style light fixtures will greatly improve the aesthetic appeal when arriving in Cashmere. Chelan County will be doing similar work from the City limits to the new West Cashmere Bridge. The City and County are working together to design and construct as one joint project to maximize efficiencies, reduce costs and minimize construction impacts to local business and residences. Chelan County has secured most of their funding. The City is funding preliminary engineering and the right of way phases to ensure the 2023 construction timeline is met. Cashmere is seeking funding for the construction phase.
