Existing Conditions

With the recent completion of the two interchanges into the Tillicum neighborhood of Lakewood, the lack of sidewalk along the Union Avenue commercial corridor has been apparent as the number of pedestrians in the area has increased. Non-motorized traffic is expected to increase further with the completion of the WSDOT Gravelly/Thorne Connector project. WSDOT is scheduled to construct the non-motorized trail between Gravelly Lake Drive and Thorne Lane in June of 2023. The non-motorized path will connect to previous improvements that the City has installed along Gravelly Lake Drive, Nyanza, Pacific Highway, and S Tacoma Way connecting Lakewood to the Flume Line trail and the Scott Pierson trail. Currently, the improvements extend from Gravelly Lake Drive to downtown Tacoma and Gig Harbor providing residents safe alternative transportation options. The Gravelly Thorne Connector will terminate at the north end of Union Avenue where this vital path to the commercial district will connect.
