The Stage 1 and Stage 2 project limits are 1.62 mi. BST & HMA-paved minor arterial has two 11-12 ft. lanes, with 8-9 ft. paved or 2-5 ft. unpaved shoulders and a 1025 ft left turn lane zone at S. 42nd Ave. All intersections are 'stop controlled at minor approaches' with no signalization nor illumination. Ahtanum Rd. is a T-2 Truck, Class-1 Bicycle, and Ped./Tourist Route, serving properties south of the Yakima Airport. The city owned 16th Ave. to City Limits section is a 4-lane w/ bike lane configuration that tapers to a two lane alignment. ADT's range from 8,872 (at S. 26th Ave) to 7,226 (at S. 52nd Ave) with a 25-30% projected increase following construction completion of a $40M, 500k sqft. fruit packing facility near 16th Ave., and a $14M, 19-field soccer/athletic center complex off of S. 38th Ave. Since 2002, 74 accidents, including two pedestrian fatality and 24 injury accidents (32 total injuries) have occurred w/in project area.

Project Description
This project Stage will reconstruct 0.80 miles of roadway to a standard three-lane urban arterial section, with 12-foot through lanes and an 11-foot two-way left-turn lane, curbing with a variable width swale (2-9 feet), a 10-foot shared use asphalt pathway, roadside illumination, improved signage and clear zones, and a three-leg signal system at the intersection of Ahtanum Road and 52nd Avenue.
