'The three public schools of Eatonville Elementary, Middle and High Schools are located adjacent to or within a block of this segment of State Route 161 (Washington Avenue N). The project is located entirely within the designated safe walking route that serves the three schools. During each school's start and release time, there are pulses of high pedestrian volumes. The street currently has 6'-wide sidewalks that are insufficient for the high pedestrian volumes. The existing sidewalks and curb ramps are not ADA compliant. The north half of the SR 161/Lynch Creek Road E intersection is missing sidewalks, curbs and curb ramps. The intersection lacks marked crosswalks on three legs. The SR 161/Lynch Creek Road E intersection also has insufficient turning radius for the northbound right turn and large vehicles regularly mount the curb and sidewalk to turn right. The street and sidewalks have insufficient illumination with luminaires only on the west side of the street. The community needs this project to address safety, mobility and comfort for the students, residents and visitors, as well as enhance an important corridor in the Eatonville town center. '

Project Description
'This project will construct improvements along SR 161/Washington Ave N from approximately 250' north of Center Street E to Lynch Creek Road E. The project is the second and final phase of improvements on SR 161. Phase 1 of the project constructed wider sidewalks and intersection improvements south of this project's extents and added a signal at the intersection of SR 161 and Center Street E. Project improvements include wider sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, street trees, LED street illumination, civic amenities, and a solar-powered RRFB on the south leg of the intersection of SR 161 and Carter Street. It also improves pedestrian mobility by constructing new sidewalks and curb ramps at the northwest and northeast corners of the SR 161/Lynch Creek Road E intersection where none exist today. To improve access and safety, the curb returns at the intersection will be realigned to accommodate the high number of logging trucks that transport freight between the forestland east of Town and the port and mills to the northwest.
